Originally Jack Hoggan, he took up painting as a hobby
in his twenties. In 1988 Vettriano submitted two canvases for the
Royal Scottish Academy annual show. Both paintings sold on the
first day with several galleries requesting they sell his other
work.
Further successful exhibitions followed in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong, Johannsburg
and New York. His paintings are reminiscent of the film noir genre, often with
a romantic theme. He uses himself and a model for all his paintings. In 2003
he received an OBE for his services to the art world and for his
charitable work.
